Identity, eras and geography

Thiel's documented career spans company formation and operations, personal startup investment, global macro management, venture partnerships, and institution-building. These activities appear under different organizations in Facebook's Management biography, Palantir's Management biography, and Founders Fund's official biography.

Useful research tags are 1990s internet payments, 2000s social software and macro investing, and 2010s–2020s growth capital and technology institutions. These are organizational labels for the chronology, not conclusions about performance. Geographic anchors include Germany and southern Africa in his childhood, Stanford and the San Francisco Bay Area in education and company formation, New York in early finance, and international portfolios in Valar and Mithril. GHI, family background and early-career sections; Valar, portfolio and team; Mithril, firm description.

People, institutions and capital to trace

Relationship Documented connection Attribution question
Stanford Review → Thiel and Norman Book The publication's retrospective names the founders. 2010 editor's note, founding paragraph Which later recruiting and intellectual relationships are independently documented?
Blake Masters → CS183 and Zero to One Masters wrote the classroom notes; the book credits both authors. Original class-note introduction; book publisher, author fields Which formulations originated in the teaching, guest contributions, Masters's paraphrase, or subsequent joint editing?
Bruce Gibney → Founders Fund manifesto The official manifesto credits Gibney in its footer. “What happened to the future?”, author credit Which statements describe the firm, and which can separately be attributed to Thiel? The bare canonical route currently redirects to unrelated content.
René Girard → Thiel An institutional biography identifies Girard as an intellectual influence. GHI, “Family Background, Education and World View,” Girard paragraphs Which specific investment rules can be traced to Thiel's own dated statements, rather than a biographer's interpretation?
Confinity/PayPal → Max Levchin, David Sacks, Reid Hoffman, Roelof Botha and Thiel The contemporary filing lists their technical, product, business-development, finance and executive roles. PayPal S-1/A, Management Separate product, fraud control, distribution, financing and governance contributions.

Palantir S-1/A, Founder Voting Agreement; shareholder footnotes 7/10 Separate operating leadership, founder equity, investment economics and voting power.

SpaceX → NASA Public procurement and development arrangements supplied a separate institutional relationship. NASA OIG IG-16-025, printed pp.1–2 Establish what financing and customer commitments were known at each private-investment date.

Evidence boundaries and biographical questions

The shareholder filings warrant separating vehicles before assigning an investment record. Researcher inference — strong: one aggregate beneficial-ownership line cannot establish a person's sole economic interest or responsibility for each underlying decision. The underlying entities are explicitly enumerated in Facebook's footnote 15 and Palantir's footnotes 7 and 10.

The source map should be used to investigate these open questions:

  • Which experiences demonstrably changed Thiel's decision process, and which connections rest only on retrospective storytelling?
  • How did the Confinity/X.com merger, PayPal management transitions and eventual sale affect later views about competition, founders and governance?
  • Which Facebook and Palantir decisions were personal investments, firm decisions or founder activities, and who supplied the critical introductions, analysis and operating work?
  • How did Clarium's losses affect later risk, liquidity and delegation practices, if any documented change followed?
  • What are Valar's exact legal and operational formation dates, and how did authority evolve across Valar, Mithril, Founders Fund and Thiel Capital?
  • Which ordinary investments, failures, missed opportunities and removed portfolio names change the account produced by famous winners alone?
  • What is demonstrable about fund economics after fees, dilution, distributions and contingent proceeds, as distinct from company valuations or ownership snapshots?
  • How do the public intellectual and political record, the fellowship, and investment activity connect in dated evidence? What credible counterevidence challenges those proposed connections?

These questions require direct voice, contemporary documents and independent witnesses; the chronology itself does not answer them.
